Why I Add Collagen to My Morning Coffee Routine


If you follow me on Instagram you will know that I love my coffee. Coffee is a big deal in our household, we have been through several machines (love the Jura), several brands of organic coffees and dozens of “coffee preparations”. My friends know that I am a coffee fanatic … and rarely will I decline a cup of coffee (the smell gets me every-time). A few years ago, I started to incorporate collagen peptides into my daily coffee routine because I had heard great things about collagen and how it is great for your digestion, joints, skin, nails and hair. I figured – why not!

Collagen helps to regulate the body’s metabolism by providing protein of low molecular weight that is quickly absorbed in the digestive tract. Our body’s ability to repair supporting connective tissues (bone, tendons, skin, hair, nails) diminishes in one’s mid-twenties (hello, enough said). The amino acids in the collagen is used by the body to build connective tissue structures to support the function of the cells. One step further, hydrolyzed collagen is the same collagen found naturally in bones, skin and cartilage which as a result supports the body natural healing.

I honestly thought nothing of adding collagen to my morning coffee. I figured it was worth a try and I would wait and see. There are multiple brands to choose from and the one I am currently using called Vital Proteins, is available on Amazon and I most recently saw Vital Proteins at our local Costco in Torrance. I find that the collagen fully dissolves and is barely noticed in the coffee (I was sneaking it in my husbands all black coffee because he suffers from sore joints and he had recently under gone a knee replacement surgery). Now it is part of our regular routine.

What I noticed: weeks later my nails and hair were growing at a faster pace, my eyelashes appeared longer and my skin looked more supple (and I was receiving complements – YAY). However, it was hard to attribute all these benefits just to my simple task of adding a scoop of collagen to my daily routine. But I did see physical change and my husband also noticed that his knees were not as stiff or sore.

The powder is tasteless and odorless. So you can add it to your coffee, tea or morning smoothie. Although collagen is safe to consume, it can be an expensive protein source. Obviously results will vary and I am not saying collagen peptides are the end all be all of supplements but I did notice physical change on the outside and can only assume its helping me on the inside too.
